Fortnite WHO???
WHO SAID WE DIDN’T NEED ANOTHER BATTLE ROYALE?!?
A review by Palmer Gamble
Respawn, the creators of the Titanfall series, dropped a free battle royale game out of the blue, with little to no advertising. Within 72 hours, the developers reported more than 10 million players world-wide, with about 1.5 million concurrent players. These are IMPRESSIVE numbers for a free to play battle royale, that isn’t Fortnite. Because be honest, you hear the phrase “free to play battle royale” a week ago, you only had ONE choice. However as of a couple days ago Apex Legends seems like a fierce competitor.
What makes this game special?
Apex Legends breaks normal convention in the Battle Royale genre by opting for a hero shooter twist. This hybrid style of game is what separates it from the most popular current Battle Royale titles out now. Adding the aspect of having a team comp with different abilities and ultimates creates a level of unpredictability missing from other games. As a player, knowing there are 8 characters (so far) with different abilities for me to master, gives the game some future longevity in my library. In fact, it’s made me forget about Fortnite all together.
This game is WOKE AS F*CK
I love lore. Especially that related to video games. So when you open this game for the first time, you find out that these Legends, are placed into this arena time and time again fighting for glory. It’s like a sadistic Super Bowl had a baby with the Thunderdome. And the thought of every game being watched by millions of (fake/digital) fans is pretty cool. The devs also shed some light on character specific lore regarding two Legends, Gibraltar and Bloodhound. Bloodhound is non-binary while there were mentions of Gibraltar saving his boyfriend from some sort of avalanche. I think everyone should respect this move from Respawn, because anyone can be a Legend.
Why this game has a future…
A Battle Royale Hero Shooter isn’t something anyone has seen before. Allowing for different team compositions with differing skills, weaknesses, and personalities creates an epic combination that draws players in for a pleasant surprise. Think about it, two free Battle Royale games doing huge numbers, makes games like Call Of Duty Blackout look almost foolish. Sure you get standard multiplayer and zombies to satisfy your needs, but paying for a full price title, but seeing a cooler FREE Battle Royale game come out while having Blackout is making me regret spending that $60…
Verdict
Apex Legends offers a LOT for a free title. Really, Respawn outdid themselves in the time between Titanfall 2 and 3, which hopefully they’re working on soon. EA deserves a little bit of credit here, for not green lighting a loot box hungry cash grab of a game. But most of that is Respawn’s doing I’m sure. PICK UP THIS GAME! There is literally no reason not to, it’s FREE and available on all platforms (sorry Switch mains), has great combat and an INCREDIBLE communication system that’s super easy to use. So go become a Legend.
