Overwatch 2 Announced! What Does That Mean?
The first day of Blizzcon 2019 was a big one, with AAA titles being announced seemingly left and right, first with Diablo 4 which was followed by the subject of todays article, Overwatch 2. When I first heard of Overwatch 2 only a few days ago as a leak, I wasn't quite sure how I felt about it. I mean, why not just release a giant patch to the original game? Why add a number? The word Overwatch already rolls off the tongue so nicely, so why?
Obviously the main motivator here is money. Blizzard makes money off us buying the newest "installment" of a game we already love, and we get to enjoy all the things that comes with it. My question however is, will this strategy work? Or will it alienate some players. Blizzard did offer some details about how this is going to work considering they already have a whole other game they've been curating for years. Those things include, skins being transferred over to OW2 from OW, players of the first Overwatch will still be able to play with those who have Overwatch 2, however some features and game modes are specific to Overwatch 2, so that's an incentive to upgrade.
Personally I'm upset with Blizzard on this one, there's no reason you can't add these features to Overwatch already. It's literally a new PvE mode that will give us some lore (finally), a new PvP mode called Push, a new Hero, and cosmetics. I would like to know why it's going to take another $60 for everyone to have these things. I understand trying to keep the Overwatch brand alive with another installment, but I think the game was doing fine, there's still a large and loyal fanbase dedicated to every aspect of the game, I only think it would be fair to those fans to add those things in as a celebration of the game itself, not to try and make a few million more dollars.
Let me know what you think about Overwatch 2 in the comments below! I would love to hear what you have to say and perhaps bounce ideas back and forth.
