Does Modern Warfare Suck?
Many gamers rejoiced when seeing the newest Call of Duty would be titled Modern Warfare, I don't think most of them are so happy anymore. Let me explain.
I'm going to do a multi-review here, but only for the things you care about, Campaign and Multiplayer. Each will get their own score, and of course I will explain why they deserve that score. Let's start with Multiplayer!
The meat of every Call of Duty game ever, has always been multiplayer, and a great multiplayer mode will and has made great games great, and bad games awful. So far I'm struggling to find a fit for Modern Warfare. I'm going to go over the weaponry, kill streaks, and the maps in this game, basically the main 3 things you think about when you say multiplayer. Let's start with weapons. The gun play is tight, everything feels smooth and polished, like Infinity Ward looked back at the previous 3 iterations of the MW series and said, "What can we do to make this the best feeling game we can?" And they succeeded in making the game feel amazing! Guns have perfect weight to them when you fire, the amount of attachments is insane, you can customize your gun however you'd like and those changes you make seem to make a noticeable difference in how the gun handles. So now that the game has been out for a while, are there any broken guns or equipment? Yesssss. There are a few things that players want fixed, starting with the 725 shotgun. This shotgun... is the most broken thing I've ever played against, to the point where I feel bad if I use it against the other team. Just look at this Reddit post. That's literally all the proof I need, and I could find MORE posts like that. The shotgun is so broken it either needs to be disabled or nerfed to the ground. Here's another post so you realize how serious of problem this is. There's also campers and claymores, which is obviously a counter to the rng that the 725 has produced, but annoying nevertheless. The claymores are a little too powerful, with really no chance of escape once you hear that click of death. Now to finish off the worst parts of Modern Warfare's multiplayer, the maps. I've never seen a worse map pool in any game. I can understand Infinity Ward wanting to stray away from the typical 3 lane design of pretty much all previous Call of Duty games, but there's really not a single map that takes that different design choice and executes it. I think the worst offender is Euphrates Bridge. Especially while playing domination, this map is a nightmare. The bridge offers a vantage point of pretty much the entire map, including the enemy spawns, so if you start losing on this map, prepare to get shot turning one corner out of your spawn. This map is definitely a snipers paradise, because as long as you're hitting your shots, there's nothing the enemy can do to even get close to you, and you'll end up dominating them with flags and kill streaks. Oh! That reminds me, I almost forgot about the kill streaks. Many of them have changed from previous games. Let's take the precision airstrike for example. In previous games your solider would just take out a tablet, and you'd be able to select which area of the map you'd want to lay down fire. In Modern Warfare it's a bit different, you take out either a laser or a pair of targeting binoculars, and you have to paint the target area by pressing the trigger. And honestly this is pretty dope, it's accurate to real life where soldiers need to laser a target area in order for the pilots to see where they need to shoot at. I don't really have a problem with any of the kill streaks in Modern Warfare, they're all pretty well balanced and useful in different scenarios.
For multiplayer as a whole, it's a solid 8.1/10. There are a few things that will infuriate you to the point of wanting to rage quit, but hey it's a Call of Duty game, you're gonna play anyway.
Now for the campaign, which is hands down the best part of this game. I'll keep this spoiler free for those who either haven't finished or haven't bought the game. So I'll keep this concise and obscure. Modern Warfare's campaign is one of the most visceral campaigns to date. Those who still feel the nostalgia of the original trilogy are going to love this new take on the series. Infinity Ward did say they wanted to reboot the story with a fresh take on previous characters, and that's exactly what we got in this game. Modern Warfare also introduces a new cast of characters that you grow to admire as the events of the campaign take place. What really makes the game special is the quick decisions you must make in order to survive, regardless of how uneasy those choices make you feel. One mission everyone is talking about is Clean House, where you go through a small apartment complex, dropping terrorist plotters room by room. There are women and children in the mix and things get dicey, and you're forced to make some difficult decisions floor by floor. However once you play it once, it'll be a mission you replay again and again. One last thing I have to commend the Infinity Ward team for is the seamless transitions from gameplay to cutscene and back. Those cuts really made the story flow and I was honestly surprised when it was over.
Modern Warfare's campaign excels at many things and while the ending may seem flat as it did for me, the after credits are going to have you foaming at the mouth for more. A very impressive 9/10.
Oh I forgot, has anyone really played Spec Ops yet?
