Why The Castlevania Series Is Probably Better Than Every Anime You've Ever Seen...

Season 3 premieres in March!!!

Chill, chill. Don't come at my neck for the title of this article. All I'm saying is, whatever anime you're watching right now probably isn't up to the same quality per episode like Castlevania is. Now Castlevania does have this insanely giant company, you've probably never heard of before, behind it called Netflix. So per episode I'm sure they're spending more money than the average animation studio in Japan making anime. However that's not the only reason why I believe this show is better than a lot of anime out there, but I'll tell you why right now.

This Show Wastes NO Time

Castlevania doesn't exactly stick to a perfect schedule. What I mean by that is there are gaps of many years in between scenes and episodes. For instance the first episode of the first season has Dracula finding his human wife, and literally in the next scene she's being burned at the stake because the Church considered her to be a witch. She was practicing science so rip. Dracula shows up immediately after her death and swears vengeance on the people who essentially murdered his wife in exactly one year. The next scene, and you may have guessed it, takes place exactly a year after those previous events. Dracula releases a plague of demons onto the humans and seemingly retreats into his castle to wait out their extinction. The entire first season is only four episodes, so this show isn't really a commitment to watch. Just watch the first episode and come back here and tell me you love it, cause I know you're gonna.

The point is, while other shows waste time with filler just to pass the time, Castlevania really manipulates time to their advantage. Creating a show that has leaves no space for you to breathe.

Character Development

Trevor Belmont is introduced as a drunk who has lost all respect for his own family name. Trevor cares about little to nothing in the beginning of this show, yet slowly grows into the leader of the three person squad he forms with Sypha and Allucard. And while the character development in this show is swift, mainly due to the time leaps that occur, the changes don't seem too drastic that they become unbelievable. These are gradual steps that each character takes across the course of their journey together. You can also see how the main three characters have long term effects on each other in terms of teamwork and overall chemistry. Trevor and Allucard are jostling for control seemingly the entire time, taking jabs at each other whenever they get the chance. While Sypha continues to try and keep them from killing each other.

Also when it comes to Sypha, she isn't a slouch in this show at all, in fact her powers are badass. Rather than the Naruto/Sasuke/Sakura trio that puts Naruto and Sasuke on a pedestal while seemingly leaving Sakura in the dust. The Sypha/Trevor/Allucard trio is much more balanced and while Allucard is the muscle, only because he's half vampire, Trevor and Sypha pull their weight and then some. Just watch the throne room scene in Season 2 Episode 7 "For Love" and then watch the fight between Allucard and Dracula after that, but watch the entire series first?

There's Raw Emotion Where There Needs To Be

Castlevania made me tear up on a couple occasions, mainly because of how the impact of the events that take place take so much tole on the characters. Every character that is. Not even the most powerful beings in this show are free from emotional conflict. This show isn't Dracula saying "I'm evil and I'm gonna do whatever I want and not fear the consequences." The consequences of Draculas actions are very profound and take a tole on his core beliefs throughout the first two seasons.

Relationships that are born from the adventure don't seem forced and are formed for the right reasons. Characters must struggle with letting others down, and in a world full of demonic monsters, being let down means death.

Castlevania Is One Of The Only Good Video Game Adaptations Out There

I'm sure you've seen a few video game adaptations in your time on this earth, many of them must've made you say "Why the hell would I watch that?!" And you know what you have every right to ask that question. Let me answer it for you! You shouldn't watch that. And I'm proud of you that you didn't.

Castlevania is an exception to that question. The question I'll ask you is "Why the hell WOULDN'T you watch this show?!" It's got everything you could possibly want in a television show and it's about Dracula and how his son forms a team with a human and a mage to take him on. One of the coolest adaptations of a video game in a long time, probably ever.

I HIGHLY recommend this show if you haven seen it yet, and if you have, let me know what you thought about the first two seasons!
