iPhone 11 Review!!! Why An Upgrade Might Be Worth It!
I've had the iPhone 11 for about 2 days now, and I know that might not seem like a significant amount of time, but it's an iPhone... so I knew what I was getting into when I pre-ordered it a week before release. However obsessively watching YouTube reviews about the phone and hearing how incremental it feels compared to the previous Xs, didn't really give me confidence about my order, until I saw everyone praising the camera's on the phone. And one of the reasons I decided to upgrade from my X, was the cameras on the 11. Having a wide and an ultra wide lens have been a want on my device for a really long time. So we're going to focus on that first!
The two camera's on the back of the iPhone 11 are both 12 mega-pixels, but this year you're getting a wide and an ultra wide lens. And I'll say that these lenses don't disappoint! The ultra wide has amazing color accuracy and the wide has incredible sharpness that makes photos and video look insanely crisp and more accurate compared to my previous X. The front facing camera is also a 12mp camera and this makes those selfie shots come out looking amazing. There's a slightly new layout in the camera app when you open it up now. You're starting off with the wide lens, and the viewfinder around the typical camera square you're looking at, is almost translucent, indicating that ultra wide lens is there and they want you to use it! The cameras on these phones are way better than I expected, and coming from the iPhone X I'd say it was definitely worth the upgrade.
Now the screen... coming from the X, and its OLED panel which looked amazing, the iPhone 11 sticks with their Liquid Retina Display, which is basically a fancy way of saying a nice LCD screen. And technically regressing in that category doesn't really bother me. The screen on the 11 looks amazing and sure if you get up close you can see individual pixels but realistically how often are you going to be insanely close to your display? Hopefully not at all, give those eyes a rest.
Let's go into some (not so big) things about this phone that changed from the X and Xs. The volume rocker buttons are a little lower than the previous 2 models. There's no more text on the back of the phone now, instead the Apple logo moved down into the center of the device, as the ultimate brand move, because who can't recognize that logo. The colors the 11 comes in are these sweet pastel colors that catch your eye immediately, especially in person. I was torn between the Green and Purple colors and ultimately went with the Green and I've got no complaints. Again these aren't huge things, but they matter to some people who upgrade frequently, maybe not the button placements, or the Apple logo change, but the colors are probably the main reason why the rich kids are going to the Apple store.
So let's go into whether or not you should upgrade... If you've got the money, and you're coming from anything before the X, I think it's a great bang for your buck! Especially as a $700 phone, the $400 trade in bonus I got for my X made it almost too easy for me. The new camera lenses are amazing and fun to mess around with, the LCD screen is fine (unless you're a snob about your display, but go off), and the implementation of iOS 13 (which for right now is still pretty buggy, however it should get better Sept. 24th when 13.1 releases, hopefully squashing all those bugs) which seems like a great jump in the day to day use of iOS. There's a lot of small changes that came this year and the small changes can honestly feel pretty big if you're coming from anything before an 8 or the X, and there's a lot to like about the iPhone 11.
